General Assignment Classroom Acceptable Use Policy

University Policy Rationale/Purpose:
The UW–Madison Classroom Support & Planning team advances the university’s teaching, research, and outreach mission by managing general assignment classrooms. We are committed to creating safe, respectful, and inclusive spaces for instruction, collaboration, and study. To uphold these standards, all patrons and staff entering UW–Madison General Assignment Classrooms are expected to follow this Code of Conduct.
Expectations for Individuals
All patrons and staff using UW–Madison General Assignment Classrooms are expected to:
- Comply with all laws and regulations, including federal, state, and local laws, as well as Wisconsin Administrative Code Chapter UWS 18 governing conduct on university property.
- Follow all applicable university and Classroom Support & Planning policies, including those related to food and drink, noise, mobile device usage, furniture, accessibility, security, photography, and filming.
- Use audiovisual systems responsibly, in accordance with the Office of Classroom Support & Planning guidelines, the Acceptable Use of Information Technology Resources policy, and classroom technology tutorials.
- Present valid university identification upon request and adhere to identification policies.
- Respond promptly to alarms and emergency instructions provided by staff.
- Keep classroom doors unlocked unless an emergency requires otherwise.
- Treat all users and staff with respect, fostering a safe and inclusive environment.
Individuals must not:
- Engage in threatening or intimidating behavior, including abusive language, harassment, or threats of violence.
- Remove or relocate classroom furniture without authorization.
- Participate in activities that pose a risk to personal safety or the safety of others.
- Create disturbances or disruptions, or act in ways that violate the standards set by the Office of Student Conduct and Community Standards.
- Sell, solicit, or distribute goods or services within UW–Madison classrooms.
- Post or distribute materials without prior approval from the Office of Classroom Support & Planning.
- Misuse, damage, or steal classroom equipment, resources, or personal belongings, or obstruct their intended use.
- Use classroom spaces for sleeping or as living quarters.
- Bring food or beverages into classrooms except for personal consumption.
Enforcement
Violations of this Code of Conduct may result in one or more of the following actions:
- Immediate removal from the classroom premises.
- Referral to the Office of Student Conduct and Community Standards (Student Affairs).
- Suspension or revocation of classroom privileges.
- Campus-wide ban from UW–Madison facilities.
- Reporting to law enforcement authorities.
- Legal action or prosecution, as appropriate.
